What is BIM :
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is mainly a procees based on an intelligent 3D model that equips architecture, engineering, and construction professionals with the insight and tools to more efficiently plan, design, construct, and manage buildings and infrastructure.
What are the benefits of the BIM process :
- Work optimisation and minimisation of design errors.
- A digital model which reflects perfectly on 2D drawings.
- Data extraction is possible at any time during the project.
- Modifications cost are less important, because the elements are parametric between them.
- Collaborative work is improved
- Minimisation of errors in design, synthesis and construction
- Global understanding of projects before it is built for all stakeholders.
- Access to the model from tablets and smartphones.
- Data management for the maintenance processes for the end client.
What is Revit :
Revit is the main software that I use on BIM projects. It is a powerful CAD software oriented modeling building information (BIM). It is a multi-business software for construction professionals. It is published by Autodesk. The native format of a file is .rvt format. Revit provides the ability to create their own "families" (components used in the project, such as walls, windows, tables, chairs, lamps, ...) that we can make parametric, with predefined templates. These very powerful families are used to create objects infinitely. The format of a family is the .rfa format which is the one i use for 3D BIM objects.
What is IFC format :
The IFC format (Industry Foundation Classes) is a standardized file format which is oriented for the objects (ISO 16739) . Its main objective is to promote software interoperability in the construction sector.
What is STL format :
The STL format, developed by 3D Systems manufacturer in the 80s, is probably the most popular format files to print files in 3D. This is a 3-dimensional representation, using triangles of a geometric surface. A 3D model is thus cut into hundreds or thousands of tiny triangles, each represented by a direction and the coordinates of each vertices.
